The new iphones are fine, it’s the iphone X but with some minor improvements, and that’s great. It’ll sell well. That’s not a problem iPhones are consistently a safe bet for a good smartphone for many people. The issue is this. Yes. The price tag. And here’s why.
Smartphones since 2009 has always been around 600-700 dollars with even the iphone 3GS having a non-contract price of 600$ for the base model. The problem comes when we look at the prices for apple products now. It’s ridiculous. That’s a used. Car. A terrible used car, but a used car still. It may be just me, but a smartphone in this price range is ridiculous. It’s obnoxious. It should be considered theft right? Well. We have to dig a little deeper. Let’s look at last year. Apple released the iphone 8, 8+ and X. They considered the 8 and 8+ the model everyone gets every year, but the X. The X is special. It’s the premium one. So of course there’s a price premium on it. It’s 1,000 dollars. Right before them, Samsung released a $950 smartphone, the note 8. So, It’s not a “I hate apple thing” it’s both major players in the industry. So, you may be saying to me. “Well, Jimmy it’s just a sign of the times, or maybe it’s inflation.” When we adjust that average $650 price for inflation from 2009 to 2018. We get a price increase of around $114. Which is huge. Then in that regard the iphone XR apple’s “value” smartphone takes that price bracket as the flagship smartphone. The one that will probably sell the most. Then there’s this new segment in recent years. The “More Premium” segment, past the flagships are even more expensive. And that’s the Note 9 and iPhone Xs and Xs Max.
“That’s nice and all but It’s not fair that these greedy companies are charging us more for these smartphones”. You’re very right, it’s not cool having to shell out a lot of money for them for the latest and greatest, but to be honest, no one needs the latest and greatest of any phones. They’re expensive too expensive, the tech inside them cost a lot to be on the bleeding edge. But they aren’t charging more than you think. Based on a couple of research done by Bloomberg and IHS, they estimate the cost of manufacturing, that means how much the materials costs not how much their employees, administrators, or marketing is paid, for the iphone 8, 8+, X, and Samsung Galaxy note 8 respectively is, $271, $288, $370, and $380. Now let’s see how many times more their retail price is than their cost to make. Surprised? I’m not. Companies try to obtain a certain margin on their products and this sort of thing is common. Apple and Samsung both, sell their flagship and super premium lines at a mark-up of 2 and half times more than cost. And as you can see for apple, that’s across all 3 of their phones. This is intentional. That and combined with the fact that smartphones are lasting longer than ever these companies feel like they can charge more for a more premium experience. I mean, if you’re using the phones for 3 years instead of 2, you’re spending around the same amount. As you would on a 650 smartphone 2 year upgrade anyway.
And the last factor is, let’s face it, smartphone tech has been stagnant for a while, sure there’s new features but they are harder and mose costly to implement than ever before. And that’s why prices are high. Everything from inflation to profit margins, to longer smartphone life spans. It all adds up. Does it still suck to dish out 1,000 dollars for a phone? Yeah. If you can’t afford that, trust me the Xr is overall a better value, just not the best at everything.
