In November 2013, Sony released a console to the Japanese market that became a quickly forgotten failure. While it did make a debut in the United States it was quickly discontinued by the end of 2016. Despite its lackluster life is this console any good? This is the great but quickly forgotten PlayStation TV.
This tiny device was meant to be a nice alternative to a PlayStation Vita, a device ending in major failure by only selling a fifth as much as its predecessor the PlayStation Portable. The issues that plagued the Vita and Nintendo’s handheld, the 3DS, were the fact that a lot of the younger mobile gamers were moving towards using their smartphones to play with frustrated birds instead of the latest handheld games.
So, Sony thought, “Hey, the PS Vita isn’t selling well but we made a really good library of games. Let’s make a home console version that costs less”. And That’s what they did. So why did the PlayStation TV fail?
After two weeks of using it, I got to learn the insides and outsides of the device and learned a couple of things.
Basically, this little guy is a headless PS vita that plugs into your TV. It’s tiny and compares well in size to streaming devices or even your smartphone. Which would make you think that it would make a great Chromecast or Roku competitor because the Vita had apps like Netflix, or YouTube. But sadly, a lot of Vita apps aren’t supported. Adding to that there’s quite a few vita games that won’t work on it either because they require things like a microphone or touchscreen input which, clearly this thing doesn’t have.
This is its biggest issue. Most people want a user-friendly device they can play games on. I mean the premise for the device is great. The execution? Not so much. With access to only a limited number of Vita titles, and even fewer apps and a starting price tag of $100, the PS TV is lacking in so many regards and lowers the appeal to more niche audiences. That’s not to say it’s not a good device. It’s a good device. You simply plug in a PS3 or PS4 controller to pair it, then you can use the controllers wirelessly. It also provides remote play, which allows you to stream your PS4 to this guy. Which means you can have a PS4 in a different room and play it on this thing. While that’s a nice feature to have, it’s also available on many devices already.
Which is why this device never sold well. It was too confusing of a product, lacking features that could make it a great PS Vita alternative. Instead of making a catered product for a nice budget home console, it became a watered-down Vita with nothing to really differentiate it. I like the product, it plays some Vita games and if that’s all you need it to do, then it’s perfectly fine. For $50 on Amazon, if you’re looking for a decent streaming device, this is not it. Pick it up if you’re that interested in PS Vita games, it’s a nice device and much cheaper than buying an actual Vita. You might want to pick it up before they’re completely gone though, who knows how much longer they’ll be available new. But for most people, they might not even look at it because of some of those “interesting” titles.
