The Force Awakens Already Breaking Records Worldwide

The Force Awakens is setting box office records across the globe and we’ve got the details right now on Clevver Newsfeed. The Force Awakens is finally here and it’s leaving a trail of broken box office records in its path. It may be the official opening day for the long awaited and much anticipated new Star Wars film, but things got kicked off early and the film has already started to break records. On Wednesday the film opened in 12 international markets where it broke opening day records in Belgium, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands and was the biggest day for any Star Wars film in all 12 countries. In total, the film earned an estimated $14.1 million in its first day of release. Things continued yesterday where the film broke the record for the biggest opening-day gross ever in the UK and Ireland bringing in an estimated $14.3 million. Early Wednesday screenings in both countries accounted for $3.6 million of that, which was also a record. Here in the States, The Force Awakens took in an estimated $57 million for Thursday-night screenings, easily beating the previous record of $43.5 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 back in 2011. Analysts expect the film will earn around $210 million this weekend in the US, which would put it in the running to beat Jurassic World’s current record of $208.8 million. It’s also expected to easily beat Jurassic World’s current worldwide opening weekend record of $525 million with some analysts expecting it to earn between $575 to 650 million worldwide. While that is far from the $4 billion Disney paid to acquire Lucasfilm, the studio will likely recoup the film’s $200 million production budget and $100 million marketing costs in the first weekend alone. While it still has a long way to go before it has a chance at breaking Avatar’s all-time worldwide record of $2.8 billion, overwhelmingly positive reviews and the fact that it likely will stay number one until mid-February means it definitely has a shot, but what do you think?
