A new Mary Poppins movie is coming and we’ve got all the details for you right now! Grab your spoonful of sugar and get ready for more adventures from our favorite flying nanny. It’s been long known that Emily Blunt would be taking on the role of “Mary Poppins” in a sequel to the 1964 Disney classic starring Julie Andrews and now we are getting an official title, release date and plot details. Disney has announced the film, titled Mary Poppins Returns, will arrive in theaters on December 25th, 2018. As for the plot of the film, Emily Blunt will play “Mary Poppins” who returns to Depression-era London to reunite with a now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks from the first film, along with Michael’s three children. After a family tragedy, Mary Poppins, along with her lamplighter friend “Jack”, played by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, will help bring joy back to the family once again. Blunt will reunite with her Into the Woods director, Rob Marshall, in what will be a direct sequel with new music from Hairspray composers and lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Regarding the new film, Marshall said quote, “I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation." In addition to the classic Disney movie, the new film will take inspiration from the seven additional books that writer P.L. Travers wrote about Mary Poppins. As for the Christmas 2018 release date, Mary Poppins Returns currently only shares the date with an untitled event film from Warner Brothers.
