Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi called on EU leaders on Monday to push Burma's military-led government for greater political reforms ahead of the country's 2015 elections.
Before meeting in Luxembourg with European Foreign ministers, Suu Kyi said that changes in the constitution are essential to make Burma truly democratic.
'The crucial one is to amend the constitution and then, there is a question of inclusive development and internal peace. All of this are linked to amendments to the constitution. There are many many issues in Burma, but in order to resolve all of this, we have to have a basic foundation of democratic practises and this can not be established without an amendment of the constitution', said Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Earlier in April, Brussels lifted EU sanctions against Burma in recognition of the country's progress towards democracy. An arms embargo, however, still prevails.
EU officials are also expected to announce greater support for the country in a 3-day meeting in Burma later in November.
'It is a wonderful opportunity for us to support the efforts that are going on, to bring this country further forward to also talk about the challenges that, I know, are on your mind. And I though the task force which take place in three weeks', said EU's Foreign Chief Catherine Ashton.
In her second visit to Europe since she was released from house arrest in 2010, Suu Kyi will visit the European Parliament on Tuesday, were she is due to receive the Sakharov Price she was awarded 23 years ago.
Suu Kyi was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her contributions towards democratic development and human rights protection in Burma.
