While students are getting ready go to back to school, they might need a new laptop to do the majority of their work. And I’m here to help as much as I can. So here’s 5 tips to help you find the perfect computer to take back to school. Let’s get started
First ask yourself this. Are you a Mac or a PC person? There’s also chromebooks for those need simple tasks such as email and document editing. PC is a safe bet because most of your classwork will require it to run some software. But Mac lovers out there, don’t worry. Apple has software that allows you to run windows on your MacBook, thus giving you all the benefits of owning a Mac and a PC.
The utility and use case matters as well. There’s plenty of people who only need a laptop for documents, email, & video. For those people, I really think a Chromebook is just fine unless you may need the features of a full-fledged laptop in the near future. That leads us to think about what you plan on studying in school. Engineering? Business? Computer Science? Number Crunching? Art? It plays a major factor. Because there are so many specifications to a laptop. So to help you out we’re gonna talk about them.
The Components matter.
Processors. Generally for this one the higher the number the better. For example, Intel processors follow a naming scheme with i3, i5, and i7. With the higher the number the more outstanding performance. Each one provides a different type of value to their machines. The more powerful the processor the more work that can be done. In terms of the human body I would consider it the brain. It determines how fast or slow the machine is at doing tasks and calculations.
Then there’s RAM. Think of ram like this. When you’re trying to make a mental list in your head, how much can you remember? That’s what RAM does for the PC. You ever have around 10 google chrome tabs open and your computer just freezes. Yeah. You need some RAM. Contrary to popular internet jokes. RAM CANNOT be downloaded. Bummer.
Then there’s the graphics card. This is super important. This determines how well games or other 3D intensive software would work on your machine, as well as generally improve laptop snappiness. Just because I said that doesn’t mean you absolutely need the best one. For general users in say business courses you don’t need THE BEST graphics cards for Powerpoint.
The Display is a major one. Much like YouTube videos, higher resolutions mean sharper images. But don’t let that fool you. There are different types of displays that despite having high resolutions may display washed out colors.
Then there’s storage the amount of files and items you can have on your computer, Hard Drives are slower and Solid state drives are faster. Solid state drives are usually more expensive at similar capacity to hard drives. So basically it’s space vs speed. If you don’t store much of anything on your computer except for documents, photos and programs, a fast 128GB SSD would be fine but larger capacities could be beneficial.
Finally, there’s features. How good is everything else? Is the speaker sound quality crisp enough? Does it have the ports you want? Is this laptop a wall hugger when it comes to battery life? Does the webcam look great or is it a potato? These are the bits that could give some laptops an edge.
Next point. Your budget. This is the biggest factor. It would be nice to have everything you want in a laptop, but you won't be able to get that within your budget. And I’m here to tell you there’s ways to maximize your budget. Here's a few money saving tactics I use. Tactic #1 Student discounts. Many laptop manufacturers & retailers provide student discounts on laptops for the back to school season. Companies like Dell, Apple, and Best Buy, to name a few have promotions year round. From there you can make your own decisions based on the specs above to find the best computer for you.
Anyway those are my 5 tips… which technically should be more like 10 but you get the point.
