Before we visited the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the border of South and North Korea, we were given a briefing by a U.S. Military Officer at the JSA (Joint Security Area) Visitor Center. In order to visit the DMZ, you must be part of a tour guided by a member of the U.N. Command, which in our case was a member of the U.S. military. I went on a USO tour (through Koridoor Tours) which began at Camp Kim in Seoul, and had us visit several areas in the DMZ and JSA. I highly recommend this tour!
Before the briefing, we were required to sign a waiver form in case hostilities broke out while we were there. During the briefing, we were given the history of the Korean War and the events that have transpired since. We were also warned not to provoke any North Korean soldiers that we might see by refraining from pointing and waving at them.
When I got back to Seoul later that day, I heard on the news that North Korea was planning an attack on South Korea the following week and these threats continued for about a month after I took this fascinating tour.
